Alex Adkisson

Alex Adkisson surprised with news he is a 2027 CTOY Finalist . Pictured smiling, holding an award, in his classroom.

Alex Adkisson teaches math, construction trades, and business at Green Mountain High School in JeffCo Public Schools and has been teaching for 12 years. In 2023, he won the Harbor Freight Tools for Schools $100,000 Teaching Grand Prize. He holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering sciences, with a concentration in engineering education from Colorado State University and a master’s degree in Real Estate and Construction Management from the University of Denver.


Merci Ames

Merci Ames surprised with news he is a 2027 CTOY Finalist . Pictured smiling, holding an award, in his classroom.

Merci Ames teaches science at Strasburg High School in Strasburg 31j and has been teaching for 35 years. She is a varsity and junior varsity basketball coach and sponsors the school’s HOSA-Future Health Professionals. She has won the Eastern Colorado Teacher of the Year award twice. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Wyoming and a master’s degree in sport administration from the University of Northern Colorado.


Shandra Botello

Shandra Botello surprised with news she is a 2027 CTOY Finalist . Pictured smiling, holding an award, in her classroom.

Shandra Botello teaches language arts and AVID at Merrill Middle School in Denver Public Schools and has been teaching for 14 years. She served as a READ Act Coordinator and was an instructional coach for nine teachers. She holds a bachelor’s degree in advertising and graphic design from Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design, a master of business administration in marketing and management from Argosy University, and a master’s degree in curriculum and educational leadership from the University of Denver.


Jason Cochrane

Jason Cochrane teaches science and cyber security at Mountain Vista High School in Douglas County School District and has been teaching for 20 years. He aims to combine his knowledge of data analysis, technology integration, and community building with student achievement and teacher effectiveness. He holds a bachelor’s degree in science education and a master’s degree in principalship from the University of Northern Iowa.


Melissa Corwin

Melissa Corwin surprised with news she is a 2027 CTOY Finalist . Pictured smiling, holding an award, in her classroom.

Melissa Corwin is a dual language humanities teacher at Summit High School in Summit School District and has been teaching for 11 years. She was a part of the Boettcher Teacher Residency Program at Adams State University and won Teacher of the Year at Summit High School in 2023. She holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Gonzaga University and a master’s degree in culturally and linguistically diverse education from Adams State University.


Viviana Martinez

Viviana Martinez is a Spanish and world language teacher at Vista Peak Preparatory High School in Aurora Public Schools and has been teaching for 18 years. She is the lead of Latinos in Action and created the “History of Hispanics in the United States" curriculum for Aurora Public Schools. She holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and Spanish from Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and a master’s degree in education from Regis University.


Jessie Russett

Jessie Russett is a sixth grade English language arts teacher at Trinidad Middle School in Trinidad School District and has been teaching for six years. She sponsors the school’s Spanish club, created the hiking club, and teaches evening ELL classes for adults. She holds a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in anthropology from Ball State University.


Arjun Sahdev

Arjun Sahdev surprised with news he is a 2027 CTOY Finalist . Pictured smiling, holding an award, in his classroom.

Arjun Sahdev teaches fifth grade at Minnequa Elementary School in Pueblo School District 60 and has been teaching for five years. In the 2025-2026 school year, he won the Pueblo School District 60 Elementary Teacher of the Year award. He holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, politics and economics from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Western Governors University.

En 2023, ganó el Gran Premio a la Docencia de Harbor Freight Tools for Schools, dotado con 100,000 dólares. Es licenciado en Ciencias de la Ingeniería, con especialización en Educación en Ingeniería, por la Universidad Estatal de Colorado, y tiene un máster en Gestión Inmobiliaria y de la Construcción por la Universidad de Denver.

Merci Ames imparte clases de ciencias en el instituto Strasburg High School, en Strasburg 31j, y lleva 35 años dedicada a la enseñanza. Es entrenadora de los equipos de baloncesto universitario y juvenil, y coordina el club HOSA (Futuros Profesionales de la Salud) del centro. Ha ganado en dos ocasiones el premio al Maestro del Año del Este de Colorado. Es licenciada en Biología por la Universidad de Wyoming y tiene un máster en Gestión Deportiva por la Universidad del Norte de Colorado.

Shandra Botello imparte clases de artes del idioma y del programa AVID en la Escuela Secundaria Merrill, perteneciente al sistema de Escuelas Públicas de Denver, y lleva 14 años dedicándose a la enseñanza. Ha desempeñado el cargo de coordinadora de la Ley READ y ha sido asesora pedagógica de nueve maestros. Es licenciada en Publicidad y Diseño Gráfico por el Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design, tiene un máster en Administración de Empresas (especialidad en Marketing y Gestión) por la Universidad Argosy, y un máster en Currículo y Liderazgo Educativo por la Universidad de Denver.

Melissa Corwin es maestra de humanidades en un programa bilingüe en el instituto Summit High School, perteneciente al distrito escolar de Summit, y lleva 11 años dedicándose a la enseñanza. Formó parte del Programa de Residencia Docente Boettcher de la Universidad Estatal de Adams y fue galardonada con el premio a la Maestra del Año en el instituto Summit High School en 2023. Es licenciada en Historia por la Universidad de Gonzaga y tiene un máster en Educación en entornos cultural y lingüísticamente diversos por la Universidad Estatal de Adams.

Viviana Martinez es maestra de español y de idiomas extranjeros en el instituto Vista Peak Preparatory High School, perteneciente al distrito escolar de Aurora Public Schools, y lleva 18 años dedicándose a la enseñanza. Es la coordinadora del programa «Latinos in Action» y ha elaborado el plan de estudios «Historia de los hispanos en Estados Unidos» para el distrito escolar de Aurora Public Schools. Es licenciada en Educación Secundaria y Español por la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile y tiene un máster en Educación por la Universidad Regis.

Jessie Russett es maestra de artes del idioma inglés de sexto curso en la Escuela Secundaria Trinidad, perteneciente al Distrito Escolar de Trinidad, y lleva seis años dedicándose a la enseñanza. Dirige el club de español de la escuela, ha creado el club de senderismo e imparte clases nocturnas de inglés como segunda lengua (ELL) para adultos. Es licenciada en Historia y tiene un máster en Antropología por la Universidad Ball State..
