Empowering District Leadership for Student Success
The Field Services Team provides universal support to Colorado’s 178 school districts, building the leadership capacity necessary to ensure every student and family has access to high-quality schools.
We believe that effective district leadership is rooted in collaboration. Our work integrates expertise from the Family, School, and Community Partnerships to drive meaningful engagement, alongside the District Improvement Strategy Office, which connects local leaders with high-quality professional learning and essential CDE resources.
Supporting Our School Boards
Local school boards are integral to student achievement, yet members often face the challenge of driving academic change without formal training. To bridge this gap, the Department provides specialized support and training mandated by HB 18-1355 and HB25-1278. We empower board members to:
- Engage effectively with and support low-performing schools.
- Review and monitor accreditation plans with consistency.
- Implement high-impact improvement efforts that lead to better academic outcomes.
Role & Responsibilities of the Colorado Department of Education
The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) provides resources and training to local boards of education upon request, consistent with statutory requirements outlined in HB25-1278 and HB18-1355. All support is non-directive, non-partisan and is intended to share best practices. CDE does not recommend specific governance approaches, as governance decisions are the responsibility of each local board of education. Given the limited scope of CDE support, local boards are encouraged to engage with professional organizations, consultants, and legal counsel to further support the development of governance practices.
