What's New for 2025-2026

Brain Injury Support Network (BISN) LogoI’m excited to share a new program that we believe will benefit students with brain injury across Colorado. While BrainSTEPS teams continue to represent the gold standard in school-based brain injury support, we recognize that not every district has the capacity or resources to sustain a full team.

That’s why we’re introducing the Brain Injury Support Network (BISN)—a new initiative designed to provide education, consultation, and support to all schools, districts, BOCES, and charter schools statewide.

Both BrainSTEPS and BISN are designed to build capacity to recognize and respond to all types of brain injury using a multidisciplinary, student-centered approach that ensures every learner has access to the support they need to thrive. Each school and district can implement the model in a way that meets their unique needs.

All Brain Injury Trainings will now be available to both BISN individuals and BrainSTEPS teams, ensuring every school/district/BOCES has access to the support they need.

If you are interested in attending a training please reach out to Jody Dickerson via email at Dickerson_J@cde.state.co.us

What Do BrainSTEPS CO Teams Do?

Brain Injury Teams:

  • Consult with schools regarding IDEA identification, IEP/504 Plan development, possible interventions, and implementation based on the Building Blocks of Brain Development © framework. Teams also consult on school re-entry planning and other issues school professionals face in supporting students with brain injuries.
  • Provide consultation and/or education to parents of any student with brain injury referred to the team and ongoing communication regarding services the team is providing for the student.
  • Monitor students annually until graduation for the manifestation of new cognitive/behavioral/social issues related to brain injury.
  • Disseminate brain injury resource information (e.g., written information, links to websites, referrals to community resources, etc.) to educators, families, and community providers working with students with brain injury.
  • Provide training on the educational implications of brain injury to educators as well as the local community (e.g., parent, medical, rehabilitation).
