Teacher Degree Apprenticeship Programs

About

Colorado Senate Bill 23-087, passed in 2023, created a new pathway for additional people to become licensed teachers. The law established the Teacher Degree Apprenticeship Program; for individuals earning their first teacher license.

This program keeps the core pieces of Colorado’s teacher licensure requirements. Apprentices work toward a bachelor’s degree while completing structured, on-the-job training under the guidance of a mentor teacher. The program is registered with the State Apprenticeship Agency and is approved by both the Colorado Department of Education and the State Board of Education.

To help guide the development of the program, CDE brought together an advisory group in the fall of 2023. The group met from August through November and included staff from Colorado colleges and universities, the Colorado Department of Higher Education, the State Apprenticeship Agency, statewide organizations such as CareerWise, and superintendents and school district leaders from rural and urban communities.
