Field Trip:

Montrose Students Explore Careers Through Internships

Students at Montrose County School District RE-1J are gaining hands-on experience and exploring future careers through internship opportunities that connect classroom learning with real-world work.

At Montrose High School, the district’s long-standing internship program places students in local businesses and organizations where they can build skills, explore career interests and develop professional confidence. The program connects about 100 students per year with employers, helping them make informed decisions about their futures while strengthening partnerships across the community.

Leigh Nansel, the district’s college and career readiness coordinator, works with employers and community partners to expand internship opportunities and match students with placements that reflect their interests.

“We create new opportunities based on student demand so they can explore what they’re really interested in doing,” Nansel said.

Building and maintaining strong relationships with local employers is key, especially in a rural community where businesses may only be able to host one or two students at a time.

“We cannot afford to lose a relationship,” she said. “Maintaining strong connections with our partners makes these opportunities possible for students.”

For junior Gray Keppen, an internship at the local Ford dealership offered a chance to learn more about a field he hopes to pursue.

“This would help me understand more about what’s going on, how it works…what we do in a day.”

Students can explore a wide range of industries, including health care, veterinary services, marketing and skilled trades. The experiences help students gain technical knowledge while also building communication and workplace readiness skills.

Senior Sadie Wareham, who interns at Alta Vista Animal Hospital, said she’s always had an interest in taking care of animals.

“I thought it was a great opportunity to figure out if I truly liked it — and I do. I really love it,” she said.

Internships also allow students to test potential career paths before investing in postsecondary education or training.

Senior Scarlett Mora’s internship at Vybe Med Spa, which offers weight loss, skincare and wellness treatments, provided clarity.

“I wanted to do an internship because I was really confused on what I wanted to do,” she said. “It confirmed it for me.”
