National School Lunch Program
The National School Lunch Program provides students with healthy, balanced meals at school each day. School lunches support students’ health and help them stay focused and ready to learn. The program follows nutrition standards to make sure every meal provides the nutrients students need to grow and succeed.
Program Requirements
Lunch must be served before 2pm. To request approval to serve meals after 2pm, complete the Extended Meal Time Waiver Form.
The point of sale must be located at the end of the serving line to ensure all meals are reimbursable. If this isn’t possible, request approval through the Non-Traditional Point of Sale Request Form to place it earlier in the line.
Sponsors with multiple sites must complete an On-Site Monitoring Form for each site by February 1 each year. Keep the completed forms with your program records.
The NSLP has additional requirements to ensure the program runs smoothly and meets federal and state requirements. Sponsors must determine student eligibility, plan and serve meals that meet nutrition standards, source food, supplies, and services, manage finances, count and claim meals accurately, uphold civil rights guidelines, implement wellness policies, and ensure food safety.
