Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP)

Introducing the New ICAP Model

Supporting Every Student's Postsecondary Future

Colorado’s updated ICAP Model strengthens how schools support students in planning for life after graduation.

The model organizes ICAP into a tiered system of supports and emphasizes meaningful planning and postsecondary readiness.

Every student. Every year. A meaningful plan.

The ICAP Model provides:

  • Universal supports for all students
  • Targeted supports when needed
  • Intensive supports when necessary
  • A Postsecondary Preparedness Portfolio

This structure helps ensure every student develops a meaningful postsecondary plan.

How the Model Works

Postsecondary Portfolio

Evidence of Readiness

The Postsecondary Preparedness Portfolio represents the “P” in ICAP and reflects student readiness.

Portfolio artifacts may include:

  • Career exploration
  • College credits
  • Work-based learning
  • Industry-recognized credentials
  • Postsecondary plans

Outcome: Students graduate with evidence of readines

ICAP as a System

Using ICAP to Support Students

The k-12 ICAP model positions ICAP as a system of supports rather than a singular activity.

Schools and districts use ICAP to:

  • Monitor student progress
  • Identify student needs
  • Improve programming
  • Align supports
  • Ensure access for everyone

Outcome: ICAP support continuous improvement

The PWR of ICAP

ICAP is a multi-year process that intentionally guides students and families in the exploration of career, academic and postsecondary opportunities. With the support of adults, students develop the awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and skills to create their own meaningful and powerful pathways to Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness (PWR).
