We are committed to helping schools keep students and staff safe. Our work includes bullying and violence prevention, mental health support, student engagement, and creating positive school climates. We provide guidance, funding, data, and professional learning, and several of our offices support safety in different ways.

Dropout Prevention and Student Re-engagement

We help schools improve student engagement through grants, training, data tools, and guidance on attendance, behavior, and discipline. We also support justice-engaged youth and lead efforts to align safety supports across the state.

Office of Learning Supports / Preventing School Violence

We help districts build effective multi-tiered systems of support. Our work includes bullying prevention, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), and Preventing School Violence grants that promote safe and supportive environments.

Capital Construction

We provide funding and technical help so schools can improve buildings to be safe and healthy for students and staff.

Exceptional Student Services Unit (ESSU)

We support students with disabilities, advanced learning needs, and those in facility schools. We provide guidance on discipline, mental health, and inclusive practices (such as Multi-Tiered System of Supports or MTSS and PBIS) to ensure safe, supportive learning.

Federal Programs and Supports Unit

We oversee federal grants under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), including Title I school improvement efforts.

We help schools build a culture of health and wellness by supporting health education, related services, and grants.
