Medication Guidelines for Colorado School and Child Care Settings

These guidelines were developed by the Colorado Department of Education School Health Services Office with contributions from Healthy Child Care Colorado and Colorado school nurse leaders. Updates occur as needed to reflect current statues, rules and regulations or to clarify content.

Getting Started

Medications must be administered in accordance with school policy. Written orders from the healthcare provider and written consent from the parent or guardian must be in place.

Medication Administration

Medication may be legally administered only by trained school personnel who have successfully completed appropriate training and to whom a Registered Nurse has delegated the task of administering medication (3 CCR 716-1, Chapter 13). Also see Special Circumstances section below.
