Youth Advisor to the Colorado Academic Standards

Colorado Youth Advisors to Academic Standards Review and Regional Educator Meetings

The Colorado Department of Education is currently accepting nominations for Youth Advisors to support the 2027–2028 Colorado Academic Standards revision process.

Student applicants must be ages 14–19 and nominated by a school or district staff member. The 2027–28 review cycle includes Dance, Drama/Theatre Arts, Music, Social Studies, and Visual Arts. Two students are expected to be selected — one representing urban communities and one representing rural communities.

Additional Information

It is critical that all applicants exhibit a strong commitment and active participation in the review process. Youth advisors to the standards review process serve a two-year term or until the standards revision cycle is complete, whichever comes first. Youth advisors may serve more than one term. The majority of the standards revision committee work is projected to occur between late March and November 2027. Most committee meetings will be conducted virtually, though there will likely be at least one in-person meeting in the Denver metro area.

Not all content areas scheduled for this cycle may undergo revision. The State Board of Education is anticipated to determine at their February 2027 meeting which contents areas to revise. Applicants will be asked their preference for content area committees, and decisions about placement on committees will be based on a combination of applicant preference and the need to ensure that each committee is balanced in its representation of the people of Colorado.
