Military-Connected Students and Families

Colorado stands ready to support military-connected youth as they transition into and out of our vibrant state. Military families often navigate unique challenges when relocating between duty stations or when parents are activated from the National Guard or Reserve.

To proactively address these concerns, Colorado proudly signed on to the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children in 2008. This compact, now adopted by all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Education Activity, is a testament to our commitment to remove barriers to educational success that arise from frequent moves and parental deployment, ensuring a smooth transition for students to and from Colorado schools.

Colorado also created the Purple Star Schools Award program in 2024 by House Bill 24-1076, designating our public schools that provide exceptional services and supports to military-connected students and their families to mitigate academic and social-emotional challenges related to frequent moves, new schools, parental deployments, and different social circles and experiences.
